RPG Character Sketches: Kingmaker Revisited (Vol 4)

Completing the set with the non-adventuring Advisor NPCs. Minus a few that I don’t want to list her for spoiler reasons.

Storyteller (Wiki Entry)

Race: Elf

Alignment: True Neutral

Class: Unknown, but clearly with magical ability.

elf man,age 50,bare face,smooth skin,tiny goatee on chin,blind unseeing white eyes,red head shawl,sicilian,orange tunic,loose green pants,short thin white hair

Storyteller just shows up in your capital one day and decides to settle in. He is one of the oldest elves in the known world, and either doesn’t remember or doesn’t wish to share his actual name. He lost his sight in the long ago elven land of Kyonin. He collects old objects, and can “read” them by touch and describe memories of people who have left strong impressions on them.

I find Storyteller a nice calming influence in the capital. He’s seen it all, so he’s rarely phased by whatever chaos crops up. And he fills in interesting bits of background and lore when you take things to him that you find in your journeys.

He can serve as either Arcanist or Curator of the Arts for your Barony, doing a more sustainable job of the former than Octavia and a more focused job of the latter than Linzi. Given the other choice for the Arts is the noxious *Jaethal* while the alternate for Arcane is Octavia, I usually end up slotting Storyteller in for the arts and living with Octavia as Arcanist – with lots of oversight.

Lander Lebeda (Wiki Entry)

Race: Human

Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Class: Rogue

arrogant young italian man, medium white hair, large puffy face, white military jacket, dark green half-cape,dark green pants

Lander is an arrogant, impulsive, good-for-nothing schemer that not even his own family likes very much. He’s the estranged heir to the powerful House Lebeda – currently being run by his mother. He tries to hide his true background when offering his services, but every character I’ve ever run takes an immediate dislike to him. I’m told he can go as far as organizing a coup to take power from you if you let the viper gain a foothold. But I’ve never given him a chance to play it out.

Shandra Mervey (Wiki Entry)

Race: Human

Alignment: True Neutral

Class: ???

mature medieval noble woman, austrian, age 60,oval face, deep-set almond eyes, crow’s feet, pale skin, serious expression, black medieval headpiece, long dark green and black velvet gown with golden accents

Shandra is by all accounts an experienced and capable diplomat… but she’s another one that rubs me the wrong way when I meet her. She’s not “evil”, but she’s ambitious, scheming, and her interests are very not well aligned with mine. And the House Surtova representative who recommends her does so in a way that really irritates most of my characters. So I’ve never given her a solid shot. By all accounts she is good at what she does – advocating for merchants and nobles. But she will leave if later decisions put you in conflict with her political allies.

Kassil Aldori (Wiki Entry)

Race: Half-Orc

Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Class: Fighter

half-orc soldier, age 25,orc jaw,olive-green skin, smooth skin, proud bearing, honorable, simple dark red military jacket, blacl pants, boots, short black hair, smooth skin, standing holding sheathed longsword

Kassil is recommended to you as an Envoy by Jamandi Aldori – the noble who is sponsoring you as a Baron. He is her adopted son, and is a trained military officer who has spent his life trying to overcome prejudices against a half-orc living among human nobility. He is often my go-to pick for Military Advisor, as he is both sensible at the position and shores up my support with the Aldori. He’s definitely still loyal to Aldori, but he makes this clear up front. And he often has useful advice for smoothing over differences with them.

Kesten Garess (Wiki Entry)

Race: Human

Alignment: Lawful Neutral

Class: Fighter

english medieval guard captain, age 30,five oclock shadow, short dark-brown hair, used plate guard armor over tan tunic

Kesten is a disgraced noble’s son who use to be head of Jamandi Aldori’s guard. He was disowned by his father for a romance with a commoner. And he considerers this a stain on his own record as a dereliction of duty – rather than a mark against his father. You can over time help him to see things a little differently, making him a bit more at peace with himself. But he still is who he is throughout. I find him an excellent Warden as commander of your town Guard. He is a bit impetuous at times, and overly hard on himself for his past, but he is loyal and his men respect him.

Jhod Kavken (Wiki Entry)

Race: Human

Alignment: Lawful Good

Class: Cleric of Erastil (God of Agriculture/Community)

balding italian man,age 50,high forehead,barefaced,thin stubble,weathered,thin brown hair,long oblong face,humble, caring,simple brown tunic,dark blue pant,wrapped shepard boots, holding a simple staff

Jhod is an old cleric of Erastil, ancient God of agriculture, community, hunting, and rural existence dating to the dawn of time. He’s a rather conservative fellow, haunted by a mistake he made as a young priest. He mistakenly accused a traveler of being a werewolf, leading to his death at the hands of the villagers. Although it turned out the traveler was, in fact, an advance scout for bandits Jhod still believes he betrayed his principles in how he handled the affair.

Jhod is the voice of caution, conservatism, and the rural community in the adviser’s council. He’s humbler and more open to other opinions than usual for the stereotype due to his experience with his own mistake in judgement. To me he is by far the best Religious adviser for your community. Especially given the other choices are Harrim and… a character to be introduced later. But I’ve never minded in the least being “stuck” with him. We don’t always agree, but he presents his arguments well, usually has sound justifications, and takes being overruled with grace. He’s by no means perfect – but he *knows* it. And as the game progresses he is not afraid to put his life on the line – even when he knows he is overmatched – to protect his flock.

  1. Interesting supporting cast. Looks like Lander is a good one to keep away from!

    1. Managed to forget one of the most important ones, but I’ll fit him in when I meet him in the game.

    2. Went ahead and added Jhod to the (Vol4) page, because how can I leave out the spiritual heart of the Barony? A man who manages to be a subversion by being a conservative village priest who is *not* abusive, power-mad, controlling, or convinced of his own holiness.
