I decided that it wasn’t as hard as I had thought to write these up without spoiling the story ahead. So continuing with NPCs from Pathfinder: Kingmaker – this time with those met in Chapter 1.
Octavia (Wiki Entry)
Race: Half-Elf
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Class: Wizard/Rogue

“half-elf california woman, spellcaster, age 30,wavy brown hair, combination of practical adventurer’s gear and blue arcane robes“
Octavia and Regongar are a pair of slaves escaped from Numeria’s Technic League – a nation ruled by arcanist slavers exploiting ancient alien artifacts. They were both sold into slavery as children, and taught magic to increase their value. Octavia is fiercely devoted to freedom and individuality – sometimes to the point of foolhardiness. She is smart and kind, but prone to thinking with her heart rather than her head. She and Regongar both are constantly on the lookout for signs of agents of their former masters.
Octavia can serve as Arcane Minister, but her freedom loving ways can result in magic in the barony being a little too loose and unrestrained. She does better as a Community Adviser advocating for the commoners. She’s still a bit overly idealistic there, but her advice and read on the commoners’ concerns is usually pretty solid.
I have often used Octavia for her ability to serve both the Wizard and Thief roles – giving me far more freedom in filling out the rest of the party. She has a bit of the hippy idealist about her, but has a harder edge when it comes to slavers, bandits, and such due to her history.
Regongar (Wiki Entry)
Race: Half-Orc
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Class: Magus

“maori orc man,age 25,orc jaw,athletic build,spellblade,five oclock shadow,army-green skin,short black hair,Half sleeve arm tattoos,sleeveless maroon&blue tunic over leather armor“
Regongar is Octavia’s partner, and a very interesting take on “Chaotic Evil”. He is not really much like his alignment would suggest – even though its hard to argue for another for him. He is a case study in some of the problems with the alignment system. He is definitely selfish, and has a temper, but very much comes across as “its me and Octavia against the world” rather than being “evil” in the classical sense of the word. He is devoted to her, and if they are together she tempers much of his harder aspects. He is fairly easy-going most of the time, with a love for wise-cracks and puns. He is a loyal friend once you have earned his trust, and it is possible over time to push him towards Chaotic Neutral. His “evil” mostly comes out as “willing to do *anything* to protect Octavia”, “willing to do *anything* to avoid being enslaved again”, and willing to go over the top seeking revenge against the Technic League if not restrained. All of these are clearly understandable motivations, and make him one of the most unusual “Chaotic Evil” companions I’ve ever seen.
Regongar can actually make a decent General/Military Adviser. He’s not usually my first choice in the role, but he’s certainly better at it than Amiri. He’s focused on a strong military over any other concerns of the role, but he’s pretty good at accomplishing that.
The primary limiter for me on taking Reg in a party is that I can’t really see taking him without Octavia. He can be a little harder to hold back without her presence, and she makes it easier to keep him in line.
Tristian (Wiki Entry)
Race: Aasimar
Alignment: Neutral Good
Class: Cleric of Sarenrae (Goddess of Dawn, Healing, and Redemption)

“swiss healer man,age 25,thin build, gentle, smooth pale skin, long straight pale blonde hair, golden eyes, dark blue stole over white robe with gold trim, white hood pulled low, leather Utility pouches, quiet, kind, touching small sun amulet“
Trisitian is a bit of a fish-out-of-water at times, being an Aasimar raised within the church with an even more direct connection to his goddess than usual due to his heritage. He is from a order which disparages armor in favor of enhanced spellcasting, making him somewhat of a “wizard-lite” as a cleric with fire spells. He is an excellent healer, and quite knowledgable about history, religion, and medecine.
Tristian comes across as soft-spoken and a bit milk-toast. He is kind, caring, and thoughtful, but speaks up far more as an Adviser than as a companion. He is also… rather intimately connected to the plot as things progress. He is pretty good as a Councilor focused on Loyalty and social cohesion. For the most part.
I rarely end up having Tristian in my party outside of quests tied to him. He just doesn’t “liven up the party” the way some of the others do. I often specialize him as a magic item crafter, and leave him building useful things while acting as a full time adviser in the Capital.
