Katarina de Winter and her crew arrived in Targos determined to make the most of the first opportunity to make a name for themselves as an adventuring company. They had heard in Luskan that Targos was in desperate need of help against goblinoid raiders, and they felt solidly up to the task!
As soon as they stepped off the boat, they were greeted by beleaguered guards warning of goblins running rampant. It seems their journey would begin right away! They tracked the source of the incursion to an old set of smuggling tunnels under a warehouse, and defeated the remaining goblin raiders. They then explored to determine how the goblins had gotten in. It looked like goblin sappers had been working for months trying to expand the tunnel network, but the patchwork job had resulted in a cave-in – forcing the goblin miners to attack the town with no other way back out. Garin examined the collapsed area very carefully for clues, and found a cryptic charred scroll.
They visited Lord Ulbrec – the leader of the town, and he was rather short and stressed until they informed him that the incursion had already been dealt with. He immediately tasked them with helping improve the town’s defenses, and asked them to show the scroll they had found to his wife Elytharra, an Enchantress of some renown. She told them that the scroll was an expended teleportation scroll… indicating that a goblin collaborator was likely still in town!
A quick investigation led them to a raggedy wizard named Phaen, who had entered town recently with a band of mercenaries. He realized the situation before they did, and almost dispatched them with a powerful spell. Fortunately, Percy was just a little quicker on the draw than Phaen.Elytharra also told them that a Diviner she had enlisted had been struck suddenly ill.. The Clerics of Tempus and the Red Knight in the tent did not appear to know how to treat the man, but Elara knew an old herbal remedy that did the trick! Unfortunately even when he was revived his visions were cryptic and difficult to make sense of. They did, however, learn that the goblins had serious magical power backing them up.The Weeping Widow Inn was apparently haunted by its namesake. But Solstice had learned much of communicating with the spirit world from her grandmother. She was able to learn that all the spirit needed was proof of the fate of her lost husband. Once they were able to find that, she was able to move on to her eternal rest. The Inn needing a new name? That’s… somebody else’s problem.Katrina got right to work helping to train some of the newer militia recruits. In the meantime Garin helped repair a broken cargo lift that was interrupting the supply of lumber to the fortifications.Percy was asked to get a group of delinquent mercenaries to report for duty at the Palisades. They were unimpressed with his entreaties until he informed them that the wizard they had arrive with – Phaen – had been discovered as a traitor and implied that they themselves were now also under suspicion due to their association with him. Then they couldn’t report for duty fast enough…And, of course, Kordaal had to get in some entertainment while the were there. He noticed a large barbarian’s wolf pendant, and engaged him in a drinking contest over it. Large barbarian or not, Kordaal was up to that challenge….
The Attack on Targos
The attack on Targos, when it came, came suddenly. Goblins were teleported past the walls and exploding fireballs breached the walls in other areas. It was instant chaos.
Solstice was able to greatly stem the tide by putting many of the advancing goblins to sleep. It wasn’t permanent, but it significantly reduced the strain on the defending men of Targos and gave them a chance to regroup.Meanwhile Lady Katarina rallied the men and kept them focused on working together instead of panicking. The goblin’s attacking forces included half-crazed wolves, but Garin was able to get through to some of them well enough to get them separated from their goblin taskmasters, off the battlefield, and headed off to safety. He then had some choice “conversations” with their former goblin keepers.Kordaal had a fine time introducing the goblins to his own special brand of high-flying mayhem. And Percy, ever the lady’s man, still found a way to be the dashing savior. But when Elara, sniping goblin archers, worked her way into a good firing position on the goblin leader/shaman supporting all the destruction, it was all over except the clean-up.
