RPG Character Sketches: Keira and Kord take Baldur’s Gate

So its been decided. Keira and Kord are taking their run at Baldur’s Gate. To fit the timeline we have an 18 y.o. Imoen, 20 y.o. Keira, and a 22 y.o Kord. For now it Keira, Kord, Imoen, Jaheira, and Kalid. Fifth spot is a floating quest spot probably until Yeslick shows up.

Keira

CG Half-Elf Thief (Shadowdancer)

S 13, D 17, C 15, I 13, W 10, Ch 14

So Keira starts out at 20 y.o. Similar background to her original – a young orphan on the streets, then grabbed by the Bhaal cult, then rescued by Gorion. She met Kord shortly after coming to the keep, as Kord was being raised by Winfred at the inn. She, Kord, and Imoen are effectively siblings who have been raised together at Candlekeep.

Keira will be a single class Thief, Shadowdancer. I may allow her a few extra points in dagger/short-sword at some point due to combat training from the rest of the group. But she’s a rogue through-and-through. Between Bhaal powers and Shadowdancer powers her “dark magic heritage” side is well covered. And I think with turning invisible in combat to backstab, shadow-stepping into and out of trouble, early HLAs, and the like she’ll be plenty viable – if perhaps more hands-on than Kord.

Kord

LG Half-Orc Fighter (Berserker)

S 18/35, D 12, C 16, I 13, W 13, Ch 13

Kord starts at 22. He was adopted young by Winfred, and has lived his life at Candlekeep. He’s been practicing with the Guard since he was a young teen, and joined officially at age 18. He’s a berserker because he has his berserk buttons, and can absolutely tap into orcish rage when he *really* needs it. Even though most of the time he tries to be as controlled, laid back, and even-tempered as can be.

Essentially he’ll be a melee heavy that’s not as good at ranged, but who can go nuts to ignore mind control or really focus on a threat if someone is close to death or if they meet an enemy who really pushes his buttons.

Keira & Kord after Gorion

This is Kord trying to console Keira after Gorion’s death.

Jaheira

Jaheira fits in *easily* as the mother figure in this group. She’s a fighter/divine caster like Helga, she has Helga’s basic attitude, and she’s even fated to lose her husband partway through. Couldn’t do any better short of including Helga herself..

This is Jaheira trying to settle an upset Keira and talk to her about what needs to happen next.

And Jaheira trying to settle and talk sense into an angry Kord who does *not* want to hear it. Kord is *deep* into “bad man hurt Keira, Kord smash bad man” territory.

Khalid

I just can’t split up Khalid and Jaheira – particularly knowing what’s coming in BG2. They need all the time together they can get before that. Khalid will make for a different sort of mentor for Keira and Kord. He’s not loud and in charge like Jaheira, but he’s a good listener and he knows trauma. His gentler encouragement has its place as well.

Khalid bonding with Keira and trying to get her to eat. Jaheira worries about the long term strategic issues. Khalid notices two young kids who are upset, exhausted, and hungry. Both styles of care have their purpose.

Khalid trying to settle down Kord his own way. Probably with better success than Jaheira was having.

Khalid trying to comfort Imoen

Minsc

Minsc doesn’t show up for a while, and won’t be a permanent party member until BG2, but this picture of Minsc and Kord arm-wrestling was just too good not to include. Even if Kord’s fingers don’t appear to make any sense.

Imoen

Human Thief->Mage (either no speciality, or whatever gives up Necromancy)

Imoen works well with Keira and Kord as a third member of their band of childhood friends. She and Keira got up to plenty of mischief with their roguish talents – Keira being better at stealth and parkour and Imoen being better at locks and traps. Imoen will also switch to mage early, wanting to learn magic as a way to remember Gorion and make him proud after always dismissing his chiding her for her lack of attention in studies while she was growing up.

Imoen & Keira making trouble together in the keep.

Imoen making it hard for Kord to do his job – (I’m not touching you!)

  1. Great team. I’m completely sold on those relationships. Jaheira as Mom is awesome! I love Imoen and Kiera as sisters too.

I sort of alluded to it in another post, but I think you’ve happened upon the future of comics. Make a character in BG, interact with the other NPC’s in the world. Create images based on those interactions. Come up with some text panels based on how the combat/quest/interaction played out ingame. Bingo, readable comic.

    I certainly read one.

    1. My BG2 run-thru with Keira and Kord attempted to do that. The tech still has a ways to go in terms of consistent characters. But it’s really close.
