RPG Character Sketches: Baldur’s Gate Revisited 5

Continuing with my Baldur’s gate re-imaginings. This set fills out a couple more NPCs I sometimes take along – including (as always) their interactions with Imoen.

Viconia

NE Drow Cleric of Shar

So for Viconia I favor the BG2 look. And for me th most important aspect of her personality is the arrogant, haughty look she presents to the world. If you get to know her well in BG2 you can see through that, but its a pretty thick shell.

czech drow woman,age 30,charcoal gray skin,challenging look,imperious,haughty,athletic,straight white hair,dark red eyes,leather armor,black cloak with purple trim,leather headband;in the hills;oil paint,drawing,dark fantasy,d&d,dark shading

Ajantis

LG Human Paladin of Helm

I view Ajantis as a heroic young man a bit too convinced of his own heroism. He believes whole-heartedly in stories of knights and chivalry, and still flush with youthful idealism.

“clean-shaven polish man in a heroic pose, age 25, fit, strong, proud, naive, plate armor, short neat brown hair, sword, simple helmet, red cape;in the hills;drawing, fantasy,d&d,oil paint”

Yeslick

LG Dwarf Fighter/Cleric and Smith

I view Yeslick as the strong, grandfatherly farmer type. He has the strength of a man with a lifetime of manual labor, rather than strength born of training and combat (although he certainly has done that as well). His true loves are smithing and telling stories.

german dwarf man, age 40, stout, chubby, kindly eyes, friendly, weathered, brown hair with braids, braided beard, simple helmet, chainmail armor, leather smock, axe;in the hills;fantasy, oil paint, drawing style,d&d

Quayle

CN Gnome cleric/illusionist

Quayle is the stuck-up know-it-all who always has to be the smartest man in the room. Despite any evidence to the contrary. So for him I went for the self-important victorian look.

“portuguese halfling man,age 45,looking over his glasses,smug expression,conceited,tanned,vain,portly,stout,neat gray hair,neat straight beard,top hat,brown robes,walking stick;in the hills;oil paint,drawing,fantasy,d&d”

Viconia & Imoen

I think Imoen would react to Viconia with a mix of awe and irritation.

Ajantis & Imoen

I feel like Imoen would enjoy Ajantis’ knightly dreams and courtesy, but would be unable to resist poking at his stiff self-seriousness, while Ajantis would be unable to resist trying to impress her.

Yeslick & Imoen

This one just feels like Imoen curling up by the fire as Yeslick tells stories and gives advice. Warm and fuzzy..

Quayle & Imoen

Imagine Quayle lecturing and trying to “educate” Imoen, and her smirking and calling out his every mistake.

  1. This take of Ajantis and Yeslick seems perfect. Especially Ajantis; he seems like a “good man” who will get more likable as he grows into it. Of course there’s tragedy overhanging him.

But once again, putting Imoen into the picture just makes it. She’s perfect with all of these, except maybe crossing the line into mean with Quayle? Honestly, I’ve never run with him in BG1, and my take is mostly influence by how he is in BG2. So perhaps I’m too sympathetic?

I sure have enjoyed all of these though.

    1. My impression had always been that Quayle grows up a ^lot* between BG1 and BG2. In bg1 he comes across to me as an over-the-top pompous know-it-all. In BG2 he still had a little PT Barnum in him, but he seems far more aware of how other people see him and far more empathetic.

I haven’t run with Viconia in forever, but I was amazed how well that one portrait matched her BG2 one. And having done the body type experiments made it much easier to get Yeslick and Quayle to look the way I wanted.

    2. It gets harder from here with the cast of BG1. Most of what’s left is folks I didn’t like very much – and not in the “fun to hate” Edwin sort of way but in the “I’ve know real scuzzballs like this” kind of way. Eldoth, Shar-teel, Dorn, and Faldorn I actively dislike. Kagain is at least relatable as simply mercenary and grouchy. Xzar can be entertaining, but Montaron isn’t. Safana and Skie are stereotypes I find more irritating than entertaining. Tiax is another flavor of Xzar. So maybe I could pull off Tiax, Xzar, and Kagain. I’ve never actually played through Seige of Dragonspear, so I don’t know those folks at all.

      1. I’ve never used any of the evil characters so I can’t really comment. I have used Safana as a temp thief in some games when I’ve dualed Imoen early. (Now though, I use Tweaks to make Alora easier to get to). But she is not my type at all! Not pleasant. And I’ve only used Skie in BG2 via mod. There, she’s funny in a vapid stereotype sort of way.

I do consider SoD a mandatory part of a playthrough anymore. I’m sure you’re aware of the critiques about it. I do find the good outweighs the bad. It is colorful and well designed aesthetically. It actually uses the sort of high def graphics that Beamdog was unable to do for the rest of the game. There are several new creature types and the AI is generally better. But most of all, there are several large scale combats of a type not seen elsewhere in the series. Big, colorful, fun battles. More like IWD sort of action. I love those, to me it makes the game.
the story is mostly forgettable. The main villain is poorly conceived, more tragic than villainous. Well, there are a couple of real villains, but they don’t take center stage until very late.

To me, Skie’s story becomes the best part of it in some ways. Tragic, but redeemed pretty well by a BG2 mod.

      2. I’ll probably go ahead an do portraits for most of the evil folks for completeness sake, but I probably won’t make Imoen interact with them. The poor girl needs a break. Unless I think of something more entertaining I think they’d all look much alike. Imoen with Xzar or Tiax might be able to be entertaining somehow. But most of the rest are just humourless. And I wouldn’t make her hang out with somebody like Eldoth for anything.

I don’t have anything against SoD, it simply came out since the last time I played through BG. So Keira and Kord will be my first experience of it.

      3. Well that makes sense. When it came out I had just burned out on BG for a while, and played it for the first time in late 2022.

so I too already knew it’s buzz. Which was probably for the best, lowered my expectations enough that I was pleasantly surprised. And perhaps I should leave it there…
