RPG Character Sketches: Baldur’s Gate Revisited 2

Continuing from the previous post, with some other BG1 NPCs I am considering for a run with Keira and Kord.

Branwen

CN Human Cleric of Tempos

Branwen is a little tricky. Definitely has the viking warrior woman vibe going, but she doesn’t look like a Valkyrie or a member of the Swedish bikini team. And her face has more of a “tired American mom” look to me than straight “Swedish goddess of war”. So I tried for a look that says, “serious woman warrior who has seen some s**t”.

“strong american warrior woman, age 35,warrior,leather tunic over viking armor, puffy face, round face, haggard, tired, leather headband, long honey blonde hair, necklace, stout;fantasy hillside ;oil paint, drawing, dark fantasy, rpg portrait, soft focus, blurred, minimalist features,d&d, dark shading

Coran

CG Elf Fighter/Thief

I’m not terribly fond of Coran’s original portrait. To my mind he should be smooth, cocky, conceited, handsome, and an unbearable flirt. While still being quite skilled at his chosen profession. So I’ve tried to capture all of that with a “flirty Irish model” look.

“30 year old irish elf rogue flirting with viewer,bare face,handsome,conceited,athletic,leather armor,brown shirt,swagger,flirty,face tattoos,purple cape,brown hair,brown eyes;in the forest ;oil paint,drawing,dark fantasy,rpg portrait, soft focus, blurred, minimalist features,d&d, dark shading”

Drake Caulfield (NPC Mod)

NG Human Cleric of Tyr

<Drake Home Page>

Drake is described as “crude, sarcastic, and cynical”. His pictures looks to me like a big german soldier. So I tried to lean in to that for this portrayal.

35 year old large german man,hungover,heavyset,strong jawline,five o-clock shadow,cynical expression,soldier,strong build,weathered,haggard,worn chainmail armor,short dark brown hair,dark blue eyes,worn dark blue tunic;oil paint,drawing,dark fantasy,rpg portrait, soft focus, blurred, minimalist features,d&d, dark shading

Garrick

CN Human Bard

Garrick is a layabout, who looks and sounds like he would rather daydream about adventures than actually live them. So I go for the “permanent college student” look of a guy who always has his head in the clouds.

“young polish man daydreaming, age 25, long puffy face,clean-shaven,simple brown cape, simple leather armor, bard, short toussled brown hair, brown eyes, chin in hand;in a small medieval town;oil paint, drawing, dark fantasy, rpg portrait, soft focus, blurred, minimalist features,d&d, dark shading”

And as before, just for fun, Imoen trying to get a rise out of each of them…

Branwen trying desperately to ignore her

Coran playing along with her

(He’d probably actually flirt with her, but I don’t care to depict that)

Drake trying to get her to see how the world really is

  1. Some more obscure characters, I’ve used all of these, except the mod. But not every play through.
But Imoen just owns every set she’s in. An absolute delight.

Minsc, Alora and Neera would be the next tier of characters I use most. Add Dyna and Corwin for SoD.

here’s the real burning question though, can we do Irenicus?

    1. Oh even better, Imoen trying to get Irenicus to laugh…

      1. I’m thinking Imoen making faces behind his back as Irenicua gives a pompous speech. That feels pretty on point to me.

      2. Oh that seems perfect. Although the hang up will always be getting Irenicus right.

    2. Still working on Minsc. It desperately wants to give him a beard. And some of the hamsters are the size of cats…

Dynaheir is pretty easy. Next on my list were Kivan and Ajantis, but I can take a look at Alora and Neera.

Hadn’t thought about BG2 yet. Feels like Irenicus would be a pain to get right. That face might take some work. Sarevok would seem to be easier. Hmm. Throw in a Bhodi and make it a villain set. A challenge!

      1. Yeah I’ve seen some really bad Minsc attempts. Some with multiple Boo. I think Minsc is the only character I still routinely use original art for.
Kivan and Ajantis would be good too! Its not like you can go wrong with your choices.

I honestly can’t even imagine how to describe Jon. Freak.
I was planning on trying some myself, I want to do Aerie. But that hair! And unique tats. Oof. I don’t know.

      2. I saw a pretty good Minsc this morning, but it clearly was working from the original portrait. Stable diffusion I think. So it works well if you just want to tweak or enhance an original, but probably wouldn’t let me do Minsc giving Imoen a ride on one shoulder.

      3. Hah, yeah. I saw something good up at Reddit months ago. But Reddit has a pretty strict no AI policy, so it was gone when I went back to clip it.
I’ve been playing around with Meta’s Open Art too. Eventually, I want to do a couple favorite characters from a TV show, so I think working from existing photos is the only way to go? At this point I’m pretty sure I can do what I want. But that’s currently my top priority.

      4. I’m having the best luck with Minsc trying out categories of people that traditionally don’t have beards. Marine works – but then he ends up with ammo belts and such. Trying various American Indian ethnicities at the moment. Most of them don’t have beards in any training imagery. Taking that and lightening up the skin works okay. Just have to deal with supressing the Mohawks and Head-dresses.

    3. I think I’m going to have to do a whole page dedicated to Minsc, Dynaheir, Edwin, Boo, and their various combinations – including with Imoen. Minsc & Imoen & Dynaheir & Imoen are both turning out fantastic. Got a preview up in the BGEE forum. And Imoen imitating Edwin behind his back. Or even better, Imoen making fun of “Edwina” just deserves some serious attention. To say nothing of Edwin trying to parse Minsc threatening him with Boo….
